Biometric Security Meets Intimate Coercion

Denmark rolled out its first national digital identity, NemID, in 2010 and replaced it with MitID in 2021. MitID requires facial scanning via a smartphone app, a feature that criminologist Malte Bundgaard Kolze describes as “very secure against all kinds of misuse” when strangers attempt access. Kolze warns, however, that the same biometric safeguard is ineffective against intimate partners who can persuade victims to scan their faces. He calls this “a blind spot” that “has a very negative impact on specifically this group.”

When victims try to prove economic abuse, the biometric log makes it hard to determine consent. Police consultant Maja Wallmeier Wolfgang notes that “the whole consent part” complicates investigations, because a login could be the victim’s, an abuser’s, or the result of manipulation.

Real-World Abuse Enabled by MitID

The article centres on Mary, who married in 2011 under a prenuptial agreement to pool finances. Her husband, earning up to 4 million kroner a year, limited her to a monthly allowance of 6,000 kroner, controlling her access to money and discouraging employment.

Research by Danner, a Danish non-profit supporting domestic-violence survivors, found that almost half of women in its counseling program have experienced economic violence; 17 % had partners incur debt or apply for public funds using their digital ID.

Other documented cases illustrate the scope of the problem. In 2017, a woman’s boyfriend used her NemID to secure a quick loan of 40,000 DKK (about $6,200). Although he was convicted of fraud, the bank sued the woman for repayment and interest. In a separate incident, a former partner opened a company in a woman’s name, leaving her with a tax bill of nearly half a million kroner ($78,120).

Institutional Responses and Gaps

Finans Danmark, the banking umbrella organization that co-developed MitID, expressed sympathy for victims but claimed it has “no independent opportunity to react” to misuse of the system. The state agency for digital government declined comment.

Denmark criminalised psychological violence in 2019, including “taking control over a person's finances,” but the definition is narrow. Only nine EU countries explicitly criminalise economic violence, and Denmark is not among them. Consequently, victims often fall outside the compensation scheme for digital-signature fraud, which excludes cases where an abuser takes out a loan in the victim’s name and redirects the funds.

The Policy Void

Across the EU, one in five women experiences economic violence, yet legal protections remain fragmented. Denmark’s recent allocation of 25 million kroner (about $4 million) for police efforts to combat intimate-partner violence signals awareness but does not address the technical exploitation of MitID. Without clearer statutes and mechanisms to attribute biometric logins to coercion, the system’s security benefits will continue to mask a pathway for financial abuse.

Aura-V Editorial Verdict • Reality Check

The MitID system’s design overlooks intimate-partner coercion, exposing a structural vulnerability that fuels economic abuse. Without regulatory change, the technology will continue to enable financial control and long-term debt for women.
